November 16, 2009 – Categorizing Colonies

Filed Under (Social Studies) by Mr. Mac on 16-11-2009

8th Graders:

Today we took a look at the 13 original colonies and put them into their appropriate region.  The original 13 colonies were broken up into three separate regions: New England, Middle, and Southern Colonies.  With these regions, they could almost be completely separate countries.  Each region developed into it’s own by adapting to the different climates, religions, resources, entertainment values, etc.  Yet somehow, the colonies worked as one cohesive unit in order to develop into a the great country that will soon become America.  At this point in time, the Colonies are still governed by the King and Queen in England.  Those are the people who live 3,000 miles away over a large ocean.  Do you see a problem with that?  Can you imagine someone telling you how to live your life, but they have absolutely no understanding of what you are going through?  This will start to drive the colonists crazy soon over the course of time; and the colonists will soon begin looking to govern themselves.
